EXPERIENCE DOROTHY FULDHEIM – April 23

EXPERIENCE DOROTHY FULDHEIM
Cleveland’s Television Legend

Dorothy (1893-1989) was a pioneering woman in the field of journalism. She was the first woman to anchor a U.S. TV news broadcast and was also a respected radio commentator. Dorothy was known for her exceptional interviewing skills and had the ability to get highly visible people to open up to her. She was a flamboyant character and made her presence known, gaining a large following of viewers and listeners.

In an upcoming theatrical production, Dorothy will be portrayed by Anne McEvoy, a professional actor and longtime associate of Women in History. Anne is passionate about telling the fascinating stories of women who have helped shape America and the world, but who are all too often left out of the history books.

If you want to experience the story of Dorothy, head to 6656 Center Road, Valley City, OH on Tuesday, April 23 at 7 pm. This event is sponsored by the Liverpool Historical Society, and the Fellowship Hall is graciously provided by Emmanuel UCC. 330 418 3243

New Valley City Welcome signs

New Welcome and Leaving Valley City Signs

Thanks to donations by:

Dandy Blend /  Transitional Living Centers
Mack Industries / Valley City Community Group

Did you know?

In the late 1960’s, the Valley City Chamber of Commerce members undertook such projects as installing signs for the industrial park on Liverpool Drive.

Four “Welcome to Valley City” signs were erected by the Chamber in October 1974. These were located on the four major roads entering Liverpool, SR 303 and SR 252.

In 1987 they were replaced with new signs, which were refurbished in 1996 and donated to the township. Somewhere around 2018 these had deteriorated and three were removed.

Today, the Valley City Community Group, working with Township Trustees, have new signs located on the four entrance roads, thanks to donations by Dandy Blend; Mack Industries; Transitional Living Centers; and the Valley City Community Group

2023 VCCG Scholarship Winners

Audrey Graham and Jozsef Lenarth were awarded VCCG scholarships at May 11 Buckeye Night of Excellence

Audrey Graham

Audrey Graham received the Barb & Rod Knight Citizenship Award for her impressive record of aptly demonstrating Citizenship skills and commitment.  Buckeye involvements included significant art, STEM and competitive running.  She continued these passions outside of Buckeye, into the larger community by volunteering at the Frog Jump, and at kid’s summer camps to help with running, art and STEM.  Her academic record far exceeded the requirements.
She will enter Miami of Ohio this fall to commence her career in Environmental Engineering Management and Science … with follow on education in the future.
Of note, 2023 marks the 50th consecutive year for this scholarship to be awarded.

Joey Lenarth

Jozsef (Joey) Lenarth received the first ever VCCG Trade School Citizenship Award.  This new scholarship was created to recognize and encourage that a trade school can provide life skills not always found elsewhere.  The VCCG has acknowledged that a specific trade may be the best path for some graduates upon high school graduation.
Joey clearly demonstrated his citizenship skills by being heavily involved in multiple sports, volunteering year after year to help youth camps, veterans, elderly, cancer research and his church.  And he carried a significant work program.  He will enroll in Cuyahoga Community College for one year to reach his goal of becoming a Firefighter, who he considers to be  a super hero.  Of note, Joey will be the third generation Firefighter in his family.

Both awards consist of their name added to a standing plaque in the Buckeye Academic Showcase, a yard sign, personal memento, and a $2000 scholarship.
A few days earlier VCCG Directors, close friends and the Buckeye Guidance Office surprised each of them in their front yard with a preliminary presentation.  They enjoyed hearing more about each Graduates accomplishments, get to know them and meet the welcoming families.  Video was live streamed via Facebook to cover the entire event allowing viewing by more friends.

New Mascot – Mayor Froggington

On Sunday August 21st, the Valley City Community Group announced the township’s new frog mascot during the Valley City Street Fair.  Kalli Gregory from Castalia, Ohio is the winner of the Samosky’s Homestyle Pizzeria $100 Gift Card with her entry Mayor Froggington.

Kalli said she wanted a name that would be cute and easy for children to remember.  This was her first visit to the Frog Jump and when asked how she learned about the festival, “My mom actually found it by watching the news!  My brother is a huge fan of frogs, so what could have been better?”

Kalli is a student at Bowling Green State University studying Neuroscience and the National Ambassador Queen for Miss Sparkle Nation, an organization which inspires, informs, and empowers women to shine and SPARKLE in all areas of life. Its goal is to promote unity and gain a sense purpose. Through this organization she promotes Cerebral Palsy Awareness. “Cerebral palsy is a neuro-muscular disorder that effects the movement of the body and is the number one motor disability in children.  My Brother has cerebral palsy and he inspired me to help advocate [for the disease].”

She has sold her artwork through Kalli’s Creative Corner on Facebook to raise money for the cause. “I advocate for those that may have challenges but can still lead an amazing life!”

The Valley City Community Group (VCCG) President, Dave Smallwood also presented a check to the Liverpool Township Volunteer Fire & Rescue Association in the amount of $9450.00 raised by the VCCG through sponsorships. “We (VCCG) work hand in hand with the Township and are honored to present this check to help the cause at the fire station from the many local businesses and individuals who show their support.”

Abraham Lincoln Statue Renewed

Valley City’s Abraham Lincoln Statue Renewed
Liverpool Historical Society Press Release, June, 2022

The iconic statue of America’s sixteenth President, Abraham Lincoln, is now renewed.

On June 17, 1926 at the Boston Road Statue Farm its concrete was poured. By 1976 it had found its way in front of Liverpool Township’s Depot Museum, 6615 Center Rd, Valley City.  There it became a landmark, warmly greeting visitors.  Countless pictures were snapped of kids and adults seated beside him.

Time and the elements took their toll. He and his top hat looked a bit bedraggled. Taking the initiative recently were the Liverpool Township Trustees and the Township Historical Society.

Professionally skilled and experienced volunteers answered the call. The concrete decay is now repaired. Honest Abe, top hat and bench have been meticulously cleaned with technically advanced cleaning chemicals.  And the proper preservative has been applied to all.  Good for many more years.

Special thanks go to Mack Concrete: Betsy Mack-Nespeca and Chris Nespeca for support and access to concrete experts, and Project Manager Marty Sublett. And to concrete expert Euclid Chemical’s Dale Mizer.  Together they assessed the need, developed a plan, provided all chemicals and supplies, and over several days completed the work.

A big THANK YOU and Hats off to this community minded volunteer team!

Schoolhouse Rehabilitation

There was a nice article in the Gazette last week about our one room schoolhouse. If you missed it, click here

A satisfying trail of smoke wafted upward from the new chimney.  Inside, the old pot bellied stove came alive as it was fired up with its first Liverpool heating duty.  The room grew warmer on this cold January 30, 2021 date.  At first warmth was felt only near the stove, but bye and bye, it gradually extended.  One could imagine students in a time gone by, wanting the desks near it.  Maybe the older boys were assigned to the cooler regions.
This last remaining one room school building, part way through a major rehabilitation, is one step closer to being open to the public.

You can make a donation by mailing a check to Liverpool Historical Society, PO Box 399, Valley City OH 44280 or contacting Paul Schaefer at 330-635-1023.

Valley City Food Box & Food Pantry

Valley City Community Group, LifeSpring Community Church and the Valley City Boy Scouts of America Troop 502 have combined their efforts to coordinate, build and install a Food Pantry Box at the Valley City Depot, 6615 Center Road, for those in need.

The Boy Scouts used their skills and materials to build a box with an operational door and installed it on Saturday, May 16, 2020 in a secure lighted location with the blessings of Liverpool Township trustee Paul Schaefer who said “We [the trustees] are absolutely happy to “Okay” this for the community.  It’s a great idea and thanks to LifeSpring [Community Church], Valley City Boy Scouts and the Valley City Community Group for doing this.”

A banner has been placed near the driveway to promote the food box, which also lists LifeSpring Community Church’s Food Pantry phone number on it for those citizens who may need further assistance.  Valley City’s local churches have promoted the Food Pantry’s services and new Food Box to their congregations, and volunteers are monitoring the Food Box daily to make certain there are items available and that they are current.

If you or someone you know needs food assistance, please contact LifeSpring Food Pantry at 330-328-3091.  Their monthly drive through food pantry is the third Saturday of the month from 10am-12pm at 1638 Lester Road, Valley City, Ohio.  We all appreciate the Valley City community who have come together to help each other in this time of need.
